Food Manufacturer Gains a Competitive Edge With QIC’s Custom Spray Drying Solutions
Customer: A large West Coast food and beverage manufacturer
Challenge
This organization recognized that having a key ingredient in powder form would speed up its finished good manufacturing process. Its leaders sought a contract spray drying provider that could turn this expensive raw ingredient into a powder, taking the care to get it done right. The service provider had to be able to accommodate the customer’s exacting specifications with regard to particle size, color, odor, taste, moisture, and yield.
Solution
Backed by over 25 years of spray drying experience, we were up to the task. We were able to handle the customer’s raw ingredient with the care it required, as well as follow the very complex process protocol needed to spray dry their product. Our Operations team, QIC closely monitored the manufacturing process for temperature, filtering, moisture control, and other parameters. Along the way, quality control checkpoints were incorporated to provide added assurance of an exceptional end product.
Results
QIC managed to successfully spray-dry the raw ingredient according to the customer’s stringent expectations while keeping the project within the desired budget. Ultimately, this helped the manufacturer execute an integral production step they were not able to complete internally. With their ingredient in a high-quality powdered form, the customer is now able to save time and money in manufacturing and secure a competitive edge in a dynamic marketplace.

Case Study 2
Leading Food Products Manufacturer Finds a Capable Product Development Partner in QIC
Customer: A leading European food and nutrition products manufacturer
Challenge
This manufacturer produces high-volume, competitive, mature powder products as well as higher-growth products and high-complexity development products. Its U.S. team had already been working long-term with a toll spray dryer when QIC first made contact several years ago.. With an eye on projects coming down the pipeline, the customer expressed an interest in finding another spray dryer with the experience and capabilities to help them develop new products and bring them to market.
Solution
The customer visited QIC and began initial spray drying trials a few months later. As the relationship grew, the customer’s staff recognized the value of our high levels of attention to detail, internal support systems and data tracking, technical support from operations and quality groups, and first-pass product quality. Also noted was our exceptional customer service across all functions, from executive management, to sales, to operators on the floor. In time, it became clear that QIC was not only a great option for the development work on newer, complex products, but was also a better option for the higher-volume products that had been at another toller for years. QIC was able to deliver a sense of confidence and trust that made it worth the customer’s time and effort to even move existing products from another toller to QIC.
Results
Over the past three years, this relationship has steadily grown, and the customer now considers QIC to be their primary tolling manufacturer for all spray-dried powder platforms in the U.S. Today, QIC dries close to a half a million pounds across several SKU’s for this customer. According to the company’s Quality Manager, “If it was my decision, I would send all of our business to QIC tomorrow.”
